THE DEITY OF JESUS
The churches of Christ Greet You
(Romans 16:16)
Text: Matthew 16:16-18
This lesson is designed to deepen your faith, expand your knowledge,
and increase your devotion
to our Lord Jesus Christ…the One who truly is the only begotten Son of
God.
Please read each Scripture from your Bible as you study this outline.
I. Jesus’ Attributes Were
Those of Deity
Eternality is attributed to Jesus (John 1:1; 17:5)
Sinlessness is attributed to Jesus (Heb. 4:15; 2 Cor. 5:21; 1 John 3:5;
1 Pet. 2:22)
The authority to forgive sins is attributed to Jesus (Mark 2:3-11; Eph.
1:7; John 14:6; 1:9; Col. 2:9).
II. The Works Ascribed to
Him are the Works of Deity
He shared in creation (John 1:3, 10; Col. 1:16-17; Heb. 1:2)
In Providence, Jesus upholds all things (Heb. 1:3).
In Redemption, Jesus is the Redeemer (Eph 1:7; Tit. 2:14; Rev. 5:9).
Jesus will share in punishing the wicked (2 Thess. 1:7-9; Matt. 3:12;
25:41).
III. The Claims of Jesus
were the Claims of Deity
Claims regarding His person:
Lived before Abraham (John 8:58); Greater than the wisest man (Matt.
12:42);
Not of this world (John 8:23); One with the Father (John 10:30; 14:9);
Has all authority (Matt. 28:18; 7:28-29);
Should be honored (John 5:22-23); Could keep from dying and would arise
from death (John 10:17-18);
Only way to the Father (John 14:6); Only hope of salvation (John 8:24);
No life without Him (John 6:53);
He is the Christ (Mark 14:61-62)…the Messiah (John 4:25-26).
Claims regarding His work:
His works were performed by the Father (John 14:10-11);
His blood washes away sins (Matt. 26:28); Would sit at God’s right hand
(Luke 22:69);
Will come again in the clouds (Matt. 26:64); Will come with His holy
angels (Matt. 16:27);
Will be the judge (John 5:26-27); Will raise the dead for that judgment
(John 5:28-29).
Claims regarding His message
and mission: Message is the Father’s (John 7:16; 12:49);
Sent from the Father into the world (John 8:42; 7:28-29; 6:38).
These claims of Jesus are either false or they are true. If they are
false, He was not the Christ, but an impostor,
and as such deserves no praise whatsoever. If they are true, He is the
Christ,
and all who reject these claims will be lost.
IV. The Testimony of
Credible Voices Ascribe Deity to Him
The angel Gabriel (Luke 1:31-35); John the Baptizer (John 1:29-34); The
Father (Matt. 3:17; 17:5);
Philip (John 1:45); Thomas (John 20:27-28); Peter (Matt. 16:15-16); the
Centurion at His crucifixion (Matt. 27:54).
CONCLUSION
Every fair minded person should now be convinced that Jesus is Deity.
The questions are: What are you going to do about it?…How are you going
to live your live knowing these things?
